JUDGING CRITERIA

  • Round 1: Each room will have 2-4 judges, one monitor, and the possibility of an accompanist for the brass rooms. Judges are volunteers with expertise in their assigned areas. They will evaluate performances in five categories, each worth ten points, resulting in a total score out of 50 points.

  • Round 2: Four judges will assess performances using the same five categories as in Round 1.

    Considerations:

  •   Tone (10 points):

    • Brass: Evaluate the quality and control of sound produced by brass instruments, considering factors like tone clarity, pitch, and dynamics.

    • Percussion: Assess the timbre and tonal quality of various percussion instruments and the performer's ability to create a pleasing sound.

    • Vocal: Evaluate the quality and clarity of the vocalist's voice, including pitch accuracy and tonal expressiveness.

    • Drama: Consider how the actor’s vocal tones and expressions enhance the delivery of their lines and emotions.

    • Dance: Evaluate the movement quality and connection to the music, ensuring they align with the intended tone of the performance.

  • Technique (10 points):

    • Brass: Assess the skill and precision in playing the instrument, including techniques like articulation, fingering, and breath control.

    • Percussion: Evaluate the proficiency in playing various percussion instruments, including rhythm, hand technique, and stick control.

    • Vocal: Assess the vocalist's vocal technique, including breath control, vocal range, and the ability to execute vocal ornamentations or runs.

    • Drama: Consider the actor’s ability to portray characters and emotions effectively through techniques like voice modulation and body language

    • Dance: Evaluate the execution of movements, including form, balance, body engagement and control, and how well they match the chosen dance style.

  •  Precision (10 points):

    • Brass: Examine the accuracy of notes, rhythms, and cohesion with accompanist.

    • Percussion: Evaluate the precision in timing and execution of complex rhythms, and synchronization with accompanist if applicable.

    • Vocal: Examine the accuracy of pitch, timing, and the vocalist's ability to maintain consistent intonation and rhythm.

    • Drama: Assess the actor’s ability to deliver lines and cues accurately and in appropriate timing with the script.

    • Dance: Evaluate the precision in executing choreography, including timing, technique, and alignment with the music.

  •  Preparation (10 points):

    • Brass: Consider the level of preparedness in terms of rehearsing, instrument maintenance, and familiarity with the chosen repertoire.

    • Percussion: Assess the readiness of percussionists regarding instrument setup, practice, and knowledge of the provided music.

    • Vocal: Consider the readiness of the vocalist, including repertoire memorization, vocal warm-up, and overall performance preparedness.

    • Drama: Evaluate how well actors have prepared in terms of memorization, blocking, and understanding their characters.

    • Dance: Examine the preparation in terms of rehearsing choreography, costume, and connection to the piece.

  •  Expression (10 points):

    • Brass: Assess the emotional and artistic expression conveyed through the music, including phrasing, dynamics, and interpretation.

    • Percussion: Evaluate the ability to convey emotion and creativity through percussion rhythms and dynamics.

    • Vocal: Assess the vocalist's ability to convey emotion, storytelling, and artistic interpretation through their singing, including dynamics, phrasing, and emotional expressiveness.

    • Drama: Consider the actor’s ability to convey the depth and nuances of their characters and the emotional impact of their performance.

    • Dance: Evaluate the dancers' ability to convey emotions, storytelling, and artistry through their movements and expressions.
